"The Diamond Necklace"
Madame Mathilde grew up in a family of clerks therefore she had none of the fancy accommodations that her piers had. Like most she was poor and had little options, but none of this matters because she had charming looks that could catch any ones eye. Mathilde did not have any plans for her life, thought she would never have a chance of marrying any one fancy, so she settled for a simple clerk of The Ministry of Public Instruction. Mathilde was very unhappy not having all the fancy things most had. When Loisel, her husband, invited her to a fancy ball she was not thrilled at all, because she did not have the proper attire. Loisel went out and bought her a ball gown, but still she was missing accessories. Loisel decided instead of buying accessories for her she should find someone to borrow them from. She went to Madame Forestier, one of her long time friends, told her of the situation of being in need of fancy accessories. Madame Forestier then led Mathilde to her jewelry selections to decide for herself. Choosing a beautiful diamond necklace, she assumed was real, she was then ecstatic about attending the ball. Mathilde had a wonderful time at the ball, upon returning home Mathilde realized she had lost her friends diamond necklace. Mathilde and her husband spent the next ten years working hard labor to replace the diamond necklace she had lost. Later on to find out that the necklace was not even real at all.
Mathilde often had thoughts of one day becoming wealthy, and became obsessed with the idea. She wanted to be like all the other wealthy women so bad that she was blinded by what she already had. Upon losing the diamond necklace, Mathilde did not feel like she could tell her friend the truth about losing her jewelry.
