The Oddyssey

The Odyssey is an excellent epic poem which captures the events as portrayed by the author. The Odyssey is a literary work by the Greek author homer and primarily focuses on the Greek hero Odysseus and his journey home after the fall of troy and his journey to return home to his wife, Penelope, while being depicted in poetry. The story, while primarily following Odysseus, is also known for its non-linear plot structure and the influences this individual events have on the many characters throughout the story. This plays into one of the major sup-plots in the throughout the story, showing the relationship between Odysseus and his son, Telemachus, in which the son embarks on his own sort of journey alongside his father. This is meant to show the way in which Telemachus is following in his father’s footsteps, and that Ithaca, the place that Odysseus fought so hard to defend, will be in good hands following his father’s death.
The story takes place 10 years after the fall of Troy, and the Greek hero Odysseus has not returned home after this time. In his place a mob of suitors attempting to court his wife have overrun Odysseus’s palace. Odysseus son, Telemachus, wishes to throw them out however he does not have the needed confidence or experience to do so. This plays into the subplot of the story which follows Telemachus’ coming of age and maturing. Throughout the adventure Telemachus gains this confidence and experience to fight alongside his father, molding him into this figure represented by his father showing how he should be like. Odysseus however is trapped by the nymph Calypso, possessed by his love for him. Odysseus longs to return to his wife and son, but does not have to power within himself to escape from his prison.
