The Perceptual Process

My best friend, Crystal, is a very flirtatious girl, but she only flirts with people she finds attractive. Lately she has been overly flirty with me, and I am not sure of what is going on. I do not want to ask her if she likes me as more than a friend because that may make our friendship awkward, but using my own intuition may misinterpret her actions. If my friends do like me for more than a friend, I would like to know so our relationship can be reestablished. This way we are clear on where we stand in the relationship. This paper will discuss the positive and negative affects of indirect and direct perception checking, and explain what happens when used in everyday life.
According to Beebe, Beebe, & Ivy (2007), perception is the arousal of any of our senses. Along with perception, comes the perception process, which includes indirect perception checking and direct perception checking. The researchers Beebe, Beebe, & Ivy (2007) state that indirect perception involves an intensification of your own perceptual powers, and direct perception involves asking straight out whether your interpretations of a perception are correct. I feel that indirect perception checking is important because it allows you to decide and think about the other person’s actions and whether they are saying what you think they are tying to say indirectly. While indirect perception checking may be important, it does not give one a direct answer and truth. Direct perception checking allows someone to show another person that they pay attention to their behavior, as well as care about their feelings.
Crystal and I were sitting at her house watching television, and I decided that it was time to discuss with her the behavior I had noticed. I said to Crystal, “Hey! So lately I have noticed that you have been more flirty with me than usual, but I am not sure why. Is it because you have been having fun or is it because you see me as more than just a friend?
