Dr. Celeste Ulrich is one of our greatest American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAAFERD) leaders. She has worked extensively to earn many prestigious honors among many teachers around the United States.
Dr. Celeste Ulrich was born on August 24, 1924 in Baltimore, Maryland. This was a time in which a special woman was born. Celeste was born in a middle class family during the Great Depression in a dual family home, with her baby brother and her older cousin. Early on the strong views of her parents had a great impact on her life. Her father was forced into the job market at the early age of twelve as the result of the sudden deaths of his father and four siblings, leaving only her father and uncle. Frank Ulrich began working at the Baltimore Gas and Electric Company as an errand boy while going to school. After finishing grade school he enrolled in night classes to become an engineer. Although he never got his engineering degree he became the superintendent of engineers at Baltimore Gas and Electric Company. Growing up her father stressed the importance of education, knowing that it would be the road to success. While going off to college it was announced that the United States would be entering World War II. It was also at this time that her big cousin, who was like big brother to Celeste, had to dropped out of school and enter the Army. Her mother worked as a comptometer operator, which was rare during that time. Ulrich’s mom took great pride in the work that she did. Her work was good enough to spring board her into the company’s vice president position. With her mom and her father working with great responsibilities, they wanted to instill those same features into their children by allowing them to help make family decisions. Celeste was able to distinguish between which would be ethical to have the roof fixed or take an outing together to Ocean City, Maryland for the weekend.
