The Road Not Taken:
the pathway for free living
I wonder how people became more far apart from the real world as time passed, and forgot the valuable asspects of life? Yet wouldn’t it be better if people were not being pushed and directed by the society and media and stop making poor desiciosns? The poem “Wasted on the Old” written by Mary di Michele is trying to give the message that the society is becoming more and more boring and uncomfortable; also most people in the society are becoming less unique and different by following the media and society. She has represented her message through the perspective of two girl best friends that communicate with each other and talk about the world they are in.
Mary di Michele has used different features in her poem that makes it special and effective, but there are some poetic features that have the most quality, which brings out the effectiveness to the readers as they read it through. The three features that can be names are the impressive figures of speech, the impressive images and the significant diction throughout the poem.
This poem has the most effect in figures of speech, such as metaphors, similes, analogy and allusions, and can show the point of the poem with agreater success. For instance, Mary di Michele has used an allusion at the beginning of stanza five, where she says “took years of playing Robin hood” or “Maid Marian”. This can refer to people in society which have the same, repeating acts and actions everyday and even years. They do not care if they’ve been acting the same which makes the life boring and useless to live. Mary di Michele says through the eyes of the girls that they don’t want to be a part of this society, that makes them look foolish to have the same routine and just be alive for nothing new.
