Macbeth wasn’t always insane. There was a time where power and greed did not rule over his body. There was a time where he was a normal man that acted as the thane of Glamis and didn’t kill to get further. Up until he meets the witches then the true murderer came out. Then with his wife’s pressure he had no choice but to start to kill. After he killed King Duncan it got to the point where he started to see the supernatural that is when we all knew Macbeth was insane. Shakespeare, in Macbeth, shows us that complete insanity is caused by external forces like, the witches’ prophecies, Lady Macbeth, and the supernatural.
It was the end of the battle and Macbeth thought he has lost. He and Banqou were riding through the forest and to their surprise they rode up to three ugly looking people, the witches. Before they could really say anything the witches started chanting, “witch 1: ‘All hail… thane of Glamis.’ Witch 2: ‘All hail… thane of Cawdor.’ Witch 3: ‘All hail Macbeth… king hereafter’” (act 1 scene 3 lines 50-53). Macbeth could not understand what the witches had just said. He is the thane of Glamis, but the thane of Cawdor still lives and he is only the cousin to the king, so how could he be king. The witches also gave Banqou some prophecies that Macbeth was confused by. They stated that Banqou will not be as great as Macbeth but greater. Macbeth was full of jealously and fear of Banqou. Once the witches left Macbeth and Banqou were to meet with the king. On the way there Macbeth found out the he is the new thane of Cawdor. He was confused but yet excited because he was soon to become king of Scotland. Once he got to the kings castle. He was blindsided by Duncan making his son Malcolm heir to the throne. The only thing that Macbeth could only think of was to kill Duncan, but he couldn’t think it was possible due to the fact that Duncan was family. Since Macbeth was confused so he sent a letter to his wife stating he must kill Duncan so the witches’ prophecies...
