Drama Feb 11/09 Shakespeare A midsummer night’s dream (only man play parts of women) Set in Athens Also set in the palace of Theseus, forest were the fairies are at, fairy world Hermia is in love with Lysander but is told by her father to marry dymitrius who Helena loves Puck and the fairy world Representation of women: low. Man were superior Marriage: serious institution, wife obedience to the husbands. Thesiuswas very eager to have a wedding. Arrange marriage was common and divorce was difficult to do. Love: Love circle between Hermia and Lysander and Helena and dymitrius. Dreams:the unconscious of the mind. Most of the action is taken place during the night time. Theatre and dream or reality and fantasy. Fantasy is another reality. Dream havebeen important during biblical times. Dreams can be truer than reality. A midsummer nights drem Thesius in love with his Fiancé, first lines important Hyppolyta is like a possession“I will wed thee in another key, with pomp, with triumph, and with revealing” (not a great way to start a relationship) By the end of the play three couples end up married, the duke, and the other two couples (Hermia & Lysander) (Helena & Dymitrius) The man tell the women what to do (patriarchal society) Lysander and Hermia don’t listen to Eugusand run away with Lysander to the forest Hermia wants to determine who she is going to marry, have sex with etc Puck and the fairy world (another reality different then the dukes world) (Fairies were invisible forces of nature) A problem in nature that both Tatiana and Oberon argue with Oberon plays a trick on Tatiana Bottom ( has a face of an ass/donkey and Tatiana are under a spell) Both are in love (think of cupid) Bottom is a human and Tatiana is the queen of fairies Tatiana is removed the spell and is horrified after having a “dream” with bottom ( metatheatre –play within a...
