Doing the Right Thing



From a young age we are taught right from wrong, as you get older you are given choices and it is your integrity that keeps you from doing the wrong thing even if its easier. In websters dictionary it is defined as “uncompromising adherence to a code of moral, artistic or other values; utter sincerity, honesty and candor, avoidance of deception, expediency, or shallowness of any kind". The first part of the definition mean doing the right thing no matter how appealing the other choice may be. An example as a leader is knowing when and when not to lie, a leader with integrity would be completely open and honest with their subordinates. A person with integrity can be trusted and looked up to. A leader with no integrity will not have the respect of the people below them. The second part of the definition means never putting up a facade in front of people. You should act the same in front of your soldiers as you do in front of your boss. An example would be keeping a uniform standard in front of a section sergeant but when they leave you unblose your boots or put your hands in your pockets. It is a crucial part of being a leader and is something most people struggle with because it is so appealing to just take the easy way out instead of putting in the extra effort, but that extra effort is what separates bad leaders from great leaders. In my opinion it is worth the extra time or sweat.

The value of integrity in a team is unmeasurable, in both leaders and subordinates alike. For the leader is will build the respect of the soldiers beneath you, they will not have to question whether or not you will do the right thing or lie to them. As a subordinate having integrity will allow your leader to not have to worry if you are going to cut corners or lie to get the job done. They will know you will do it the right way every time. In a team if everyone has integrity the cohesion will be smooth and tight, everyone will trust the others to do...
