The Roaring Twenties

Life in the nineteen twenties was far different then life is today. We have different styles of fashion, music, movies, and cars. Many of the styles we have today reflect and were influenced by the twenties. Fashion had a flashy edge, music was all about the sound of jazz, movies were silent for the most part, and cars were as basic as they get. Americans were drawn to these four material things because it was all so new and they were curious. One word to describe all of nineteen twenties fashion, Flappers. The Flapper came out in 1926, and had a modern, sexy look. Stereotypical ones wore their hair cut very short and sleek, and wore a tiny shapeless dress that had tassels and strings hanging that moved when they danced. The girls wore heavy makeup and smoked, and appeared to be rebels. But basic, everyday fashion was much different and changed a lot over the decade. In 1918 hemlines on dresses were never seen above the ankle, but when 1929 rolled around hemlines were just a couple inches above the knee. This made it more convenient for dress-wearers so move around as they danced. 1920’s was considered the age where “New music was born” and also recognized as the “Jazz Age.” But a variety of music emerged in this decade. Pop, blues, big band, and many other different types of music were played at local clubs where people went out to on Friday nights. The most popular form, jazz, originated in New Orleans and was influenced by Irish and African-American instrumental music. It was a form of entertainment and was very well known by all. Another form of new entertainment was motion pictures. Although they had no sound when they first debuted, they were very popular. People traveled from all over to theatres, then called Nickelodeons, to view movies.
