Field Work #3

When I walked into Jewel Osco I immediately noticed that there were more women than men in the grocery section. I walked towards the fruits and vegetable section and noticed that there were more women in that area. The men were also in the area but more women than men. The women are more likely to be shopping groceries than men due to the role the majority of women in society play as the nurturer. At the grocery store I saw that there were a mixture of ethnic backgrounds. There were White, Hispanic, Middle Eastern, Black, and Asian, also in that order describes the majority of race in the grocery store. It seemed that people from different cultural backgrounds than America often checked the fruits closely before putting it in a bag and into their carts. People of white background did not observe as much, especially the white males. This may be due to more experience from their native countries. Whereas in different countries they do not really have grocery stores, but rather marketplaces or farms to pick from where they must closely examine the fruits and vegetables. The men and women at the store were in their mid 30’s and up. The combination of people that came into the store were women by themselves, women with children, couples, couples and children, men by themselves, men with children, and rarely teenagers. The couples that came into the store, the men were usually pushing the carts and the women were picking out the food. The men that had came alone to the store were usually not very observant to the food as the women were. The white and black men were usually less observant than other men of different color. The older the women were, the more observant they were. Men with children often had more snacks than real food in their carts, whereas the women had more real food than snacks in there carts.
