The Secret to Raising Smart Kids
I have picked the article “ The secret to Raising Smart Kids” for my personal reaction. Before I started to read the article, I’m curious by what is the different between smart kids and effort kids. The article is talking about the how do people think about intelligence. It divided into two mind-set -- fixed mind-set and growth mind-set. Fixed mind-set makes student had a negative views of effort, believing that having to work hard at something was a sign of low ability. They thought the intelligence did not need to work hard becuase they attribute errors to a lack of ability that they feel powerless to change. People who believe in fixed intelligence will be unwilling to admit their mistakes. Growth mind set makes students think intelligence is malleable and it can be developed by education and hard work. They believe that learning was more important goal in school than getting a good grade. They also believe that the more they labored at something, the better they would become at it.
In the article, the experiment indicated different ways of praise would have different influence. Intelligence praise had encouraged a fixed mind-set. Praised for being smart became discouraged and doubting their ability. They will try to get away from the challenging assignment, because they want an easier one instead. Contrary, praised for students effort did not lose confidence but would work more hard.
The article tells us that we are usually wrong way of thinking that most of the parents praise their kids for the intelligent. It is so true that will make the kids scared of challenge . my parents were the one of those who did the same way of praise. I have been a kid when I was young, my parents would praise me as an encouragement. They would probably said “My little child, you are a smart person, I believe you can do it well“.
