Technology has affected individuals among our society in response to the alterations and improvements that continue to be made. The Internet, in particular, has changed the daily routine of many, how people interact with others and the way they use their brain. In Carr’s book, “The Shallows,” it is portrayed how the Internet has formed people into impatient, fast working beings, thus reliant on immediate satisfaction. Although the advancement in technology has given people the opportunity to thrive, the formation of the new online habits have been a distraction to our priorities and have reshaped our mentality in a negative manner.
Though it may seem as if the technological world is consuming the lives of many for the worst, the Internet has been a beneficial invention due to the positive impact is has produced. For example, the Internet has allowed people in our society to be more efficient. When someone is in need of a fast response from an email or has a desire to make an online purchase, the Internet comes to great use. It has allowed our world to “send messages through the network as well as receive them.” (85) The Internet has given people the opportunity to constantly stay connected and communicate quicker across the world. In doing so, there has been a global effect that has been created throughout the improvement of technology. Many feel as if there is a tighter connection among the human race by being able to log onto different social networking sites. One can stay in touch with anyone from a distance due to the inventions currently being produced. Moreover, our society has become much more educated due to expansion of the new forms of media the Internet has created. As intelligent beings whose minds have “become attuned to the crazy quilt of Web content,” (94) people are now able to teach themselves so much more via the Internet.
