The short story “the snows of Kilimanjaro” is a short story full of symbols. Each of the symbols that the author used is in relationship with the main character’s characters. The first symbol used in this short story is the frozen carcass of leopard seen near the mount of Kilimanjaro. A leopard is an animal that pounces with purpose, with lightning speed, and with accuracy. A leopard also has grace, strength, courage, and dignity. In this short story, Harry would like to be like the leopard. He has his desire, his purpose of to be a writer- a famous writer. That’s the reason why Harry and his wife went to the forest of South Africa to have more calm and more simplicity than in town. Simplicity and calm are among the required conditions that writers should have to have good writings. To reach his goal, Harry has the speed idea of only marrying to wealthy women. That is to say that, the main character- Harry- exploits his wives to reach his goal. However, the leopard mentioned in the epigraph failed and didn’t reach “The House of God”. But even though the leopard didn’t reach his goal “The House of God”, he was near it and that is thanks to his courage, dignity and strength: “close to the western summit there is dried and frozen carcass of a leopard” l. P1. But Harry didn’t have courage, Harry didn’t have strength. Of course he had a chance of reaching his goal. That is to say, he has the chance of having money to fulfill his dream; however, instead of using them correctly, he uses his money to drink and to have the same way of life as his wealthy relatives. Consequently, he failed and he didn’t even deserve to be put near the mount of Kilimanjaro as the leopard.
