ESSAY “ The Taming of the Shrew”.

The relationship between man and woman has changed through history, from a animal stereotype through a masculine dominance to how we are now. In “The Taming fo the Shrew”, we are going to see a time in which relationships were male dominated, when the woman was more like an object or an animal than a human, or at least that is what society thought. In the play, there are a lot of relationships, but we are going to focus in the relationship of Petruchio and Katharina, a very complicated relationship for the time because Katharina is a feminist, something that in those days was seen very badly. Petruchio is a man that only thinks of money, and the question is how the relationship of Katharina and Petruchio is changes throughout the play.

Katharina is compared all the time with her small sister, Bianca, who is the image of the perfect woman. This can be supported when Katharina is fighting with Bianca at the house and Bianca says “Good sister, wrong me not, nor wrong yourself,”. The use of the words “good sister” in this situation shows us that Bianca is a good and respected woman that all ways gives the best of herself, This is the opposite of the image we have of Katharina, which can be seen when Katharina says to her father, “What, will you not suffer me? Nay, now I see She is your treasure,”. This shows us how the other people see her compared to her sister, the “treasure of the family”.

When Petruchio and Katharina first meet them two of the hate each other and it is easy to see why Petruchio is there. Petruchio is a friend of one of the lovers of Bianca, the one that tells him about Katherina and say “shall I then come roundly to thee And wish thee to a shrewd ill-favour'd wife?”. Petruchio says “One rich enough to be Petruchio's wife, As wealth is burden of my wooing dance,”, which make us see the way of thinking of Petruchio that the only thing it matter is the money.
