The Theoretical Framework Analysis of Film Not One Less and Under the Same Moon

The Chinese film Not One Less and Mexican film Under the Same Moon are chosen to be specifically compared and contrasted in terms of genre, public sphere, plot and which cinema they fit in.
The term ‘public sphere’ comes from Habemas which ideally refers to an area in social life where people can get together and freely discuss and identify social problems, aiming to influence political action. In contemporary society, it is undisputed that the media plays an important role in the debate of social issues and the cinema seems to be one of the best medium to enable this debate, since it is widely and easily accessed. This part of presentation will compare these two films in relation to public sphere, to see in what ways and to what extent the two films touch upon social issues.
Firstly, both of these two films present the major social issues. In the film Under the same moon, behind the love between the little leading actor and his mother, the journey to United States actually reflects the illegal immigration from Mexico. Americans usually view this immigration as financial burden and this phenomenon is few mentioned in the media. The director, however, describes this issue from another angle: the illegal immigrants are usually from undeveloped countries, they come to the U.S.A. for the dream of a better life. They work really hard and do the work that the locals won’t do, which actually contributes to the American society. So this film promotes the inclusion of the particular groups- illegal immigrants in U.S.A.. It also empowers women. The role for women is more prominent. Just like the mother in the film, she is very independent. She works day and night to raise her family and refuse the help from a man who loves her. Similarly, the Chinese film Not One Less also reflects the social problem: the poor educational conditions in countryside.
