This book shows us that it takes two people to make a relationship work. You can’t have only one person putting in effort and the other person being apathetic. You need two motivated individuals. Even though Mala had come to this country to be his wife, and had been knitting him sweaters, the husband did not care about her and did not consoler her when she cried b/c she missed her family. The last line “As ordinary as it appears” ties together the entirety of the book. These are all ordinary stories that are not so focused on action and plot. Its not like a Harry potter book when this is happening and then this. There is not a lot of dialogue but there is more description, so you really get a sense of the people’s feelings and what they are like and what they feel and think. The stories are so elegant and ordinary in the way that they are so simple. Its about the human nature of us all, its about relationships, its not about fantastic adventures, its about emotions. These stories, when you think about it, could happen to any one of us, there is really nothing special about them, they are special because of how humans relate to them.
