According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention website, from the year 2009-2010, 48.5% of children ages 2-19 were obese. The more and more frequently we as a country buy processed foods instead of organic foods, the faster this percentage is going to increase as the years move on.The catch though, cheap processed foods are all that low-income families can afford. Low-income families can’t afford fresh, organic foods so they buy the cheap, processed foods that are available. Personally, this is completely unfair to anyone of any kind, low-income or not. This affects low-income families unfairly because it can cause a lot of health problems and it will cost the family more in the end.

As a parent or guardian, you’ll do practically anything so that your family has food in their stomachs at the end of every day. They’ll buy the foods on sale, eat less and even go through a drive thru more than once a day. If you go to a drive thru and look at the prices, the average cheeseburger is below a dollar while a salad sky-rockets to about 5 dollars. This is because a salad consists of more organic and fresh food while taking longer to prepare compared to a slab of processed meat on a grill for a minute or so. Sadly, the prices of these products only encourages the family to buy the cheapest food which tends to be the most processed and unhealthiest foods on the market. Since low-income families are constantly eating unhealthy foods due to their prices, many health problems can occur. The most common health effects are diabetes, high blood pressure or heart rate and, of course, obesity. Some reports have even stated that cancer is at high risk these days if too much processed food is put into your body. It may seem cheap at the market or restaurant, but it plays a big toll on your body and health.
