Unforgettable Life Lessons

Human beings are social animal and by this I mean, our life and every action should not exist in selfish disposition. We are always influenced by other people on any account. Moreover, we sometimes ask or receive help from others. In our world, there are so many people or things that are definitely in need of someone’s help. For example, short time ago I heard about one of the cruelest disaster on human life in Haiti. So many people were killed, injured and starved in loneliness. We should have looked after them as we could do. However, it is not the only way to do volunteer work by going directly to Haiti. In this concept, my English teacher made fundraising by selling our old textbooks and sent some money to the official committee. I deeply agreed to that effect and that chance became my small volunteering for Haiti. At this point, I would like to share my experience about volunteering and how it affected me.
Actually my family has been doing volunteer work on a regular basis since my childhood. I am not sure but that might be so because our family believes in God. But I cannot remember anything about my young volunteer work since that was not by my own will. It is true that my realization about the importance of volunteering was after I grew up. The turning point was the chance to do volunteer work in Mongolia.
In August 2006, I went to Mongolia through Habitat for Humanity which is a famous Non-Governmental Organization. In Mongolia, a lot of people are still in the nomadic life which is not always good. Therefore the government of Mongolia has led their people to be settled in a certain town. For that reason, we HFH Korean team went there to build some houses for 11 days. We built bricks for 10 little houses in one town, and painted them. The task required a lot of labor. The sun was too hot and we were all around much dried air. But in every sweat, we were expecting something good to the people who would be the villagers....
