The Unicorn
Living in a modern world, we believe in the things that surround us, things that we see on the news or outside, things we have evidence for. Many people believe that dinosaurs are fiction, just because they have not seen one. Others think that creatures do not exist because there are lots of tales about them. One of these creatures is the unicorn (literally translated from Latin the name of the creature comes from unus – one; cornus – horn). Unicorns are amazing creatures combining beauty, innocence and power.
Unicorn is usually described as a creature with a head of a deer, similar to a horse in the rest of its body, tail of a boar, feet of an elephant, and a single spiral horn, standing out in the middle of its forehead. According to the myths, those who have seen a unicorn believe this is the most beautiful thing they’ve ever seen. The silvery white color of the creature was even more dazzling than the sun and its eyes were very big and full of tears.
One of the reasons unicorn was one of the most desirable creatures among ancient civilizations were its miraculous powers. Legend has it that the strength of a unicorn is fully concentrated in its horn. Egyptians believed that dust from the unicorn’s horn was supposed to protect against deadly diseases. Or, if you drank from the horn, you would be protected against any poison. Even today the supernatural powers of the unicorn are still mentioned in movies and books. In her book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, J.K. Rowling talks about a man who became immortal after drinking the blood of the creature.
The legend has it that it’s almost impossible to hunt. The only method seems to be to take advantage of the unicorn's great love of purity and innocence. If a young virgin is placed in the unicorn's way it will approach with reverence, lie down beside her, lay its head down in her lap, and fall asleep.
