bb t rthe 199th. The official name of the Memorial is the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial was created in honor to the members of the U.S. armed forces who fought in the Vietnam War and who died in service or are still unaccounted for.
The Memorial Wall is made up of two black granite walls 246 feet 9 inches (75 metres) long, designed by Maya Ying Lin. The walls are sunk into the ground, with the top flush with the earth behind the.
The memorial wall was designed by a girl named Maya Ying Lin, Maya Ying Lin was only 21 years old when she became the designer of the memorial wall by entering in a national design competition. This competition was open to any U.S. citizen 18 years of age or older. As the winner Maya was awarded with $50,000 dollars, that was the prize for been the winner of the competition. Maya’s Ying Lin name appears on the memorial wall to, along with the names of the officers of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund. The main part of the memorial was completed in 1982 and is located in Constitution Gardens adjacent to the National Mall, just northeast of the Lincoln Memorial. The memorial is maintained by the U.S. National Park Service, every year around 3 millions of people go and visit the memorial wall.

The walls form a V, deepest in the earth at the vertex, tapering and rising to ground-level over their length of nearly 500 feet. Meeting at an angle of 125 degrees 12 minutes, the walls point precisely to the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial--embedding the Memorial within the rich fabric of American history.
