Genetic engineering is different from traditional breeding. Instead of effecting the genes of the animal indirectly, it targets certain genes and effects them directly. What this basically means is that with genetic engineering we are able to add new traits to an organism or remove unwanted ones. For example rice could be genetically modified to produce more vitamin A or crops could be implanted with vaccines. There are many breakthroughs in genetic engineering but are these new evolutionary steps good for our future?
Over the years the different fields of genetic engineering have produced great new research and ideas which are being done today:
• for example genetically modified food
• disease control
• organ availability
• and cloning
genetically modified food is the most used form of genetic engineering. It is being used constantly to reduce famine, allow crops to become easier to grow, create stronger more durable crops and food with more nutritional value. Many countries are using genetically modified foods, especially countries that have problems with growing fruits due to their climate.
The chances of contracting a disease thanks to genetic engineering is much lower than in the past. Scientists are finding new ways to introduce vaccines into our lives without the help of a needle. It’s mostly done through crops, it has decreased the number of people dyeing with diseases.
Organ transplant has always been a problem. It’s difficult to find a organ that is a match for a person bodys as the body usually rejects foreign objects. Genetics has allowed us to implants our genes within a pig to allow the pig to grow the organs needed for the transplant. The organs are harvested when needed. This has been very helpful to people in dire need of a transplant.
With all these benefits people don’t take time and think of the negative influences genetic engineering will have.
With more and more breakthroughs our lives become easier. Scientists believe that the...
