Theater M/W

Nobody knew how theatre began, but in the ancient theater religious ritual was a big thing they believed in. Annual festivals were held in Athens, honoring the god Dionysus. They gathered in dance with tribal mask, drums, flutes, and sticks to give a sacrifice to Dionysus the god of fertility, and wine “Dionysus conquered the immortal happiness through sadness and death”.
The play took place in what looks any stadium or theater area to most places today. Descending seats for the audience all the way down to the altar, followed by the skene. They used the natural land to their advantage sculpting rock to form castle like features. In Oedipus the king play they used not only the altar but also the hillside around it.
Mask covered the entire head and had different facial features so that you could see the emotional state of the characters, and men could play women roles. In the Oedipus the king video Oedipus had the best mask it was gold like with king like features making him look mighty. The mask worn by the chorus had a comic relief feeling to them they were awkward and funny. When seeing a female mask like Jocasta’s you can see the feminine touch to it. When the servant came out to tell what he saw his mask was worn to show the horror, and surprise of what took place. Usually the masks were made of linen, wood, or leather, and a marble or stone face was used as a mould for the mask.
