Chapter 1 Vocabulary (pg 16)
1. Abdominopelvic Quadrants- health professionals divide the abdomen (through the navel) into four areas to help locate specific organs
2. Abdominopelvic Regions- anatomists have divided the abdomen into nine regions to identify the locations of organs
3. Anatomical Position- the reference position of the body, which gives meaning to directional terms
4. Anatomy- the study of the structure of an organism and the relationships of its parts
5. Atrophy- wasting away of tissue; decrease in size of a part; sometimes referred to as disuse atrophy
6. Abdominal- the cavity containing the abdominal organs
7. Cranial- toward the head
8. Pelvic- the lower portion of the ventral cavity; the distal portion of the abdominopelvic cavity
9. Pleural- a subdivision of the thorax
10. Spinal- the space inside the spinal column through which the spinal cord passes
11. Thoracic- the space referred to as your chest cavity
12. Control Center- ex. As the thermostat, it compares the actual temperature to the normal temperature and responds by activating the building’s furnace
13. Superior- higher, opposite of inferior
14. Inferior- lower, opposite of superior
15. Anterior- front or ventral, opposite of posterior
16. Posterior- located behind, opposite of anterior
17. Ventral- of or near the belly; in human, front or anterior; opposite of dorsal
18. Dorsal- referring to the back; opposite of ventral
19. Medial- of or toward the middle; opposite of lateral
20. Lateral- of or toward the side; opposite of medial
21. Proximal- next or nearest; located nearest to the center of the body, or point of attachment of a structure
22. Distal- toward the end of a structure; opposite of proximal
23. Superficial- near the body surface
24. Deep- farther away from the body surface
