MEANING AND IMPORTANCE OF TOURISM
Tourism is the world’s largest and fastest growing industry. It is an invisible export, which earns valuable foreign exchange without any significant or tangible loss of internal resources. It is a source of revenue and employment. There are countries in the world whose main source of revenue is tourism. India is a country with a great potential for tourism.
The Definition of Tourism varies source by source, person by person.It can be explained in the basic terms as :
"Tourism is a collection of activities, services and industries which deliver a travel experience comprising transportation, accommodation, eating and drinking establishments, retail shops, entertainment businesses and the hospitality services provided for individuals or groups traveling away from home"
UNWTO defined it as indicated below;
"Tourism comprises the activities of persons traveling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes."
Importance of tourism
Tourism is a noble industry in the enhancement of world economic standards in many forums. Tourism is important to the world because of the amount of income it brings into countries and it promotes interconnectedness throughout the world. It provides people visiting the country of their choice with the services while they are there in exchange for the visitors boosting the country's economy. It helps provide jobs to the residents of the country that are being visited not only in the tourism and service industry, but also in the manufacturing industry
Tourists tend to have disposable income that they spend in the country they are visiting. Most tourists are well educated with sophisticated tastes which have resulted in the demand for better service and products. Many tourists also travel with their families, resulting in the need for more family-oriented vacation spots such as water sports...
