Skills enhancement and job development are key factors to boost motivation and increase retention of employees nowadays. The opportunity to grow and develop their careers is key driver for motivation and engagement. Training and development has become the strategy most commonly used by employers to foster employee commitment of highly skilled workers, to improve success and efficiency of the company. Training and development is an integral strategy to achieve competitive advantage not only for companies doing business in China but also worldwide.
Therefore, training and development practices recommended to China should be geared enhance of skill competencies, language, technological advancement, and cross culture. However, would be also important to integrate leadership, financial management, and business strategy as part of training and development program as these areas are fundamental to achieve competitive advantage.
Skills are fundamental to achieve competitiveness in the workplace. A common and inexpensive method is to establish an on-the-job training program. According to Advameg  (2012), "Research indicates that employees acquire approximately 80 percent of their work-related knowledge and skills on the job, making consideration and implementation of successful on the job training programs indispensable for employers” (Training and development). Besides as new programs or computer software become available is important to train employees so skill competencies are enhanced. Technology advancement is important considering that in China technology is an emerging trend that potentially will change the way job is done. Furthermore, on-the-job training programs aid to prevent resistance to change.
