There are various types of applications to keep in contact with friends and families such as Facebook, Whatsapps, Skype, Wechat, Facetime etc. It a a huge differences compared to the old times that people always get to know each other face to face. Even if they are far apart, people of the old times would rather meet up and talk than mailing each other to keep in contact.
