Types of Punishment

Punishment Research Paper Axia College of University of Phoenix Reviewing the four types of punishment, retribution, deterrence, rehabilitation, and societal protection all have an effect on deterring crime. It is hard to say which has a more substantial effect. Societal protection will obviously remove the criminal all the way out of society, but it is not proven that this will make other would be criminals afraid of doing crime. The reality is crime is still committed everyday, even with the possibility of severe punishment. Capital punishment also will remove the criminal out of society, but the cost of carrying out a death sentence is very costly to society, more times over than it is to sentence a criminal to life. There is rehabilitation, even with the high repeat offender rate; this seems like the most effective, in terms of providing skills and the education to the offender thatthey will need to succeed outside of prison.
