Understanding the World of Writing

Going back to school as an older student can be a challenge, but understanding the world of English can be even a bigger challenge. English 49 has been an experience I will never forget. Professor Ball has taught us to understand the world of writing, such as writing an effective thesis, finding evidence to support your thesis, organizing the evidence, and learning patterns of development. Throughout the course, beginning with a prologue paper, was just the beginning of many other writing papers during the semester. I feel that the challenge and effort put into these assignments were a positive experience. Initially I had become so overwhelmed that I felt as if I would not be able to continue. However with the help of Professor Ball, and the English Center, along with countless hours of writing, rewriting, and revising eventually I started to hold onto some of the information that I needed to retain. While my struggles and inability to comprehend at basic writing skills in the beginning of the course were evident, I also learned about my strengths as a writer and areas which show potential growth and continued improvement.
One of my weaknesses in the beginning of the semester was my inability to comprehend what was being said. As a student who has not been in school for over a decade, the struggle is greater than those who maybe just got out of high school and are familiar with essay writing. I really thought that I was ok in writing but my graded papers proved otherwise. There had come a time during the course that I felt there was just no way I could do this, and wanted to drop the class because it was too much for me. Furthermore having a learning disability added much stress to what I describe was a nightmare.
