UK System of Government and Scottish Parliament
The Parliament of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is the highest legislative body in the United Kingdom and British overseas territories. It is the only body that has parliamentary dominion making it the supreme power over all other political and legislative bodies inside the UK and its territories. It is headed by the sovereign, Queen Elizabeth II. The parliament is two-tiered with an upper house, the House of Lords and a lower house, the House of Commons. The Queen is considered as the third component in this structure. The Parliament consists of 659 members each representing a different area of the United Kingdom. The parliament of the UK differs from the government. The parliament consists of different political parties, independent MPs and Lords who each represent a series of different views and interests. The party with the highest number of seats in the parliament forms the government and the Leader of this party becomes the Prime Minister. The parliament is responsible for overseeing the work of different government departments and ensures that the Prime Minister and his team are running the country in a proper manner. A majority of the MPs and Lords have to agree when a law is passed, the final part of which had to be agreed by the Queen.
As mentioned earlier the parliament is two-tiered and the work of the parliament is conducted in two houses, the House of Lords and the House of Commons. The Commons is elected publicly. The party that has secured the highest number of members in the Commons forms the government. Members of the House of Commons are primarily responsible for debating political issues and other legislative proposals for new laws and amendments. It is also responsible for granting money to the government by approving bills for newly proposed taxes etc. The Prime Minister, the Chancellor and some of the main members of the party work here.
