When most people think of an ultrasound they usually think of babies just because a lot of people don’t know that there are many different types of ultrasounds, which are used for a variety of diagnoses. When going into Ultrasound you can do three different types of ultrasound, they all have different purposes; General, OB-GYN, and Vascular ultrasounds.
General ultrasound a person would do mainly in a hospital. A general ultrasound exposes parts of the body to high frequency sound waves to produce pictures of the inside of the body. The images are caught in real time which means that it shows the structure and movement of the internal organs as well as the blood flow. This person would typical do ultrasound on the abdomen area. This type of ultrasound is used to help doctors diagnose problems and help there primary physician come up with a plan of care for the patient.
OB_GYN or Obstetric ultrasounds are considered to be safe, non invasive, accurate, and cost efficient. OB-GYN is a type of ultrasound that looks and babies and female organs. This is used to make sure that babies are healthy and growing appropriately. It is also used for women that are having female issues to diagnose a problem. When the baby is delivered they monitor it closely to make sure it is not breach, or upside down. Also, they use the ultrasound to see if the baby is moving down during pregnancy.
Vascular ultrasound looks at patient’s veins and arteries. This is used to see if there is a blockage or another problem with them. They also use high frequency waves to exposed body parts to form a picture of the body. Vascular ultrasounds are used for a variety of different things: They monitor the blood flow, check for blood clots, evaluate success after a surgery such as bypass, and even check the severity of patients’ varicose veins.
