Using Sex in Advertising

In today’s market, advertisers are looking for a way to sell their product in a way that was once frowned upon. What I mean is, sex in advertising. The brains in business believe that no matter how degrading the ad is, the product has to be sold, and one way they do it is by identifying their product with sex. In other words, sex sells, right? Well I picked an ad for a child’s game console called “Nintendo Wii”. The name of the ad, which I found on YouTube, is called “Wii Sexy Commercial”. In this ad there are two female actors. One is portraying Playstation 3, which is another game console, and the other is portraying the Nintendo Wii. In this ad, one woman is intelligent, overweight, and was modestly dressed. This is the woman who is supposed to be the Playstation 3. The other woman is skinny, appears to be less intelligent, and has on more revealing clothing. She is portraying the Wii. The ad clearly is trying to get you to buy a Nintendo Wii. It shows the consumer that if you want to want to look cute, and have fun, that you need to buy a Wii. Is this what we want to show our children? This ad clearly crosses the line for sex in advertising.
This advertisement is trying to get people’s attention to buy the Nintendo Wii by using a cute girl, who is only wearing her underwear. She is dominating the setting between the two competitors by dancing around and showing off her body. There is one part in the ad where the camera focuses on her chest, and then in another part, the camera focuses only on her butt. The other woman is trying to tell the consumer about the features in the Playstation, but the other woman keeps dancing around and telling the consumer that the Wii is just fun, cute, and cheap. The cute woman is taking the limelight by dancing around in her underwear, while the bigger woman is being ignored, even though she is telling the consumer more about her product than the underwear girl.
