Protesting for what we believe is right isn’t always easy. Protest music has been with civilization probably from the first ever war we had faced. The anti-war music that was prevalent during the era of the Vietnam War opened up new doors and opportunities for the children of that era to shine. This generation was not going to sit around doing nothing while the government brainwashed the people with false information. The aftermath of the combat veterans was the first generation to go home prior to the end of the war exposing the naked truth and lies of the Vietnam War. People who have heard the stories and tales get inspired from what they hear, and they form art. Their voice was necessary to be heard in order to end the war.
The music of the Vietnam War time period served as a gathering cry and a cause for action. However, it was not the music that was important, but rather the message it carried. It was a sense of communication through out the people, and it united a population of people who felt dispossessed. The message of the music displayed a variety of emotions that varied from anger and happiness. While the war had the effect of numbing everyone under the age or thirty, the music was a way to bring out the inner bottled emotions of the fear and anger, which would then bring out the need for people to feel that there was something that needed to be done about it, like they say actions speak louder than words. The lyrics that they engraved in our heads contain politics to show us how corrupt it was back then. Being the political animals humans are, we are involved in political actions on a daily basis. Political messages have been in songs forever, which make them still popular up to today. During the Vietnam War, there were songs that glorified the war effort as well, such as “Ballad of the Green Berets”.
