We all love bubblegum, right? The flavor of it swimming around in our mouths as we chomp down on that chewy substance that will soon be stuck around your mouth after a pop of the bubble! But did you ever just stop and think, “Who made the first bubblegum?” I will admit, I never have, but I can tell you one thing, Mr. Walter Diemer needs much more respect for this. Walter Diemer was the first person ever to make the first brand of successful bubblegum, the brand “Dubble Bubble.” Dubble Bubble is known throughout the world, yet Diemer’s name is still only important to the few who care, but I’m willing to change that, just like he was when he stumbled upon making his worldwide accident.

The year was 1904, on January 5th to be exact, when Walter E. Diemer was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, nobody knowing quite yet that a world changer was born. As the years went by, Diemer got a good education at South Hamilton Institute of Technology and at South Harmon University which was where he met his future wife Adelaide. After getting married, the couple had two children, one boy and one girl. Then soon after, the entire family decided on moving to Ocean City, New Jersey, which was where their whole life started to turn for the better. Diemer got a job at the Fleer Corporation as an accountant in the 1920s, the company selling their trading cards and bubble gum, but the gum that they sold didn’t have a very good flavor to it and it was really sticky. Years later, he was going through some old recipes and found a different bubble recipe that seemed to work if it had different ingredients added and taken from it. Once done with that, having no experience in making bubble gum whatsoever, he created the bubble gum brand called “Dubble Bubble.” The company made over a million and a half dollars on only the gum, selling it at only a penny apiece. Things skyrocketed from there for Diemer, but then drastically went downhill. In 1986, his two children died for unknown...
