Hamlet by Shakespeare is a play with a mystery at its core. Although the protagonist has powerful evidence that his Uncle Claudius has in fact committed regicide in order to ascend to the throne, he hesitates in carrying out an appropriate revenge. Something holds him back. What this something is we are never told for sure within the play, but there are nevertheless several clues that hint at an explanation. He cannot commit the necessary violence because he feels somehow guilty himself. In the course of the play, Hamlet is confronted by many choices he must make, and Shakespeare uses extremes to present his theme that the pursuit revenge leads to tragedy.
When the ghost tells Hamlet that he has been given the role to take revenge for his father, he thought of many ways to do it. Expecting Hamlet to do the “deeds” early, Shakespeare drags the killing till the end of the play. The development of the idea, revenge in Hamlet is defer due to Hamlet’s uncertainness. First, Hamlet is unsure if the Ghost is telling the truth, so he started a battle of wits with Claudius by acting mad. Eventually he staged a play named “The mousetrap”, From Claudius reaction; storming out in rage, Hamlet knows that his late father’s ghost is telling the truth and that Claudius is guilty. The second delay is when Hamlet could have killed Claudius while he was confessing to god. However Hamlet argued that Claudius would have gone to heaven because he confessed his sins. Therefore Hamlet decided to wait for another chance. Half-way through in the play, when Hamlet is talking to the Queen, Polonius was hiding behind the arras. However when the queen cried out for help (What, ho, Help!) Polonius reacted but was stabbed by Hamlet thinking it was the King. This again leads to the start of another conflict between Laertes and Hamlet.
