The article states Megan Rapinoe risks hypocrisy with plans to play for the United States women’s national soccer team but not stand during the U.S. national anthem. It is no surprise that Megan Rapinoe got selected to play, but it is a big deal. The reason it is a surprise is that she decided to join the protest begun by NFL player Colin Kaepernick by refusing to stand during the national anthem is played. She knelt during the national anthem Sunday in Chicago and planned to do it again on Wednesday night’s game but was preempted by the owner of the Washington Spirit by playing the anthem before the teams entered the field. Megan Rapinoe plans to kneel again during the anthem when the U.S. plays Thailand in Columbus on September 15, 2016. If she follows through with this plan, her actions could be considered hypocritical. When Rapinoe spoke with the media, she mentioned people asking how she will handle multiple anthems with the Thailand game coming up. She dismissed that by saying “people are uncomfortable with the conversation that I’m trying to have.” With all considered, it could show as a sign of disrespect if she does not stand for Thailand's anthem. Many Americans views her choice not to stand during the U.S. anthem as disrespectful.
I stand on the principles of service to God and country. As a veteran who served 30 years in the United States Navy and had deployed in defense of our great nation, I find it very disturbing that we have well-paid athletes in the United States that show disrespect for our nation’s anthem. A tremendous amount of service men and women have defended our freedom and way of life. Many did not make it back to their loved ones in one piece, and some paid the ultimate sacrifice with their life.
