Describe the activities involved in the performance management process.
In order for an organization to have an effective performance management system they must specify relevant aspects of the performance, appraise performance, provide performance feedback by giving problem solving techniques for their difficulties and rewards for those who are really getting the job done. It is critical in the performance management system to accurately appraise the employees within the organization and be able to give constructive feedback that is either positive or negative and help to create a learning, caring work environment for all employees.
Define the five (5) criteria for evaluating the effectiveness of a performance
management system.
There are five ways for measuring the criteria to help determine the effectiveness of a performance management system. The first way is Fit with strategy which is aiming employee behavior and attitudes that support the organizations strategy, goals, and culture. So if the company is customer service oriented, then the performance management process should focus on the customer service aspect of a review.
Validity in looking at a performance management system is looking at whether the tool actually measures what it is intended to measure. For instance, does the performance measure all relevant aspects of performance and leave out the irrelevant aspect of the work performance.
Reliability is the consistency of the given performance management review. So if an manager gives a results from 0 to 5 and another manager give the same results, then the measure would be assumed to be reliable. Test-re-test reliability is when the person has a consistent job performance rating over a period of time. So if there is lack of test-re-test reliability then there may be no way to determine if this appraisal is consistently how the employee is performing their duties.
