Whale Rider 7

Good morning/afternoon Mr. Speaker and my fellow members of Parliament. I speak on behalf of the Attorney – General, Mr Robert McClelland. The most talked about issue in these past couple of months has been abortion. Should abortion be de-criminalised in Victoria? This one question had been racing through everyone’s mind. Abortion is a medical procedure that terminates pregnancy, in other words it is the killing of an innocent child while it is still in the womb. Should abortion be made legal? I think not. Legalising abortion will be like legalising MURDER.

In the past, abortions could be performed if the doctor certified that the pregnancy is a genuine threat to the mother’s life. The new law now allows women to have an abortion in the first 24 weeks of pregnancy and later if they get the agreement of two doctors. Why should abortion be made legal now? There are always two sides to every coin. I agree that a woman might want to have an abortion if the pregnancy is due to rape. If the woman is too young or if she cannot afford to care for the child or if the child is suffering from diseases or conditions or deformity like dwarfism or the brittle bone disease. It is understandable that a mother would want an abortion if she knows that her child is going to lead a life of suffering.

But is it right? Is it ethical, that women who have healthy babies and can afford to care for a child, go for an abortion? It makes no sense at all when decisions like this are made. If a woman does not want to have a child why kill it or “terminate” its life when you can give it up for adoption or better yet why make one when you know you don’t want a child??? There are so many families all over the world who are just dying to have a child and here we are actually allowing women to kill their own foetuses. This is absolutely ridiculous. If you do not want to have a baby, then take the necessary measures to prevent it. Our Government now gives a baby bonus to the family if the...
