What Causes a Community College Student Stress?

Community college can be considered a major stressor for many young people. Stress can be defined as the way the body responds to any change or challenge in life. Stress can be both good and bad. When stress is managed properly it can be useful and healthy, but when stress becomes unmanageable, it can have adverse health effects. Good stress is the rush of adrenaline that allows you to win a race, get your projects finished and turned in on time, or meet and accomplish other challenges that you encounter on a daily basis. However, stress can turn bad when you are unable to overcome it. Stress is a natural part of life. Every day there are responsibilities, obligations and pressures that change and challenge you. Stress comes from many different directions when a person enters the college life. Community college is a wonderful opportunity to not only further your education, but experiment with life before it gets too serious. Having said that, college life is not without its stressful situations. Today students have a lot of stress because of a lot of different reasons. There are many causes that bring on stress for community college students; finances, relationships, and the pressure to succeed appear to be the most common factors.

Possibly one of the biggest stressors for most community college students is the considerable debt they will have to take on, in order to afford tuition fees, campus accommodation and textbooks. More and more students have to pay for college on their own, or with little assistance from their parents. Quite often this is a source of great concern for a kid that is straight out of high school and may not be financially literate. At the same time as the debt alone is stressful, the need to service this debt can cause the student to over-extend themselves.
