What Is Art

What is Art?
The two works I chose are Arnolfini Double Portrait by Jan van Eyck and Maggie’s ponytail by Susan Rothenberg. I chose these two because one I see as art and the other I would say is art but I do not see what the artist sees so it makes it difficult for me to call it art.
The first I will refer to as work one, the Arnolfini Double Portrait is in my opinion art, due to the fact it is representational, people can relate to it and it is very recognizable. Although by looking at their clothes it was clearly taken years ago. The message is undetermined it has iconography.
Work two, Maggie’s ponytail is art but as I stated previous I do not see it at all. I have looked and studied the picture, and cannot figure out what the artist is portraying. I do not see in work two the natural beauty like I see in work one, the people, very defined, unlike work two where I am staring trying to even see something recognizable.
Work one makes me feel happy the way I portray it, where two is very dark to me and has no meaning, or emotion. I like art to be full of color and rich in texture. Work two to me is boring. I believe art is and...
