What Is Education?

What is Education? Is it the definition found in the dictionary, “the systematic instruction, schooling or training given to the young in preparation for the work of life (Oxford English Dictionary),” or is education more profound than its mere definition? There is no right or wrong answer, because everyone has a different interpretation on what education truly is. What it is to you might not be the same for someone else, but I can only speak on my own behalf today. And whose responsibility is it any way, to educate the “young”? Is it the parents, teachers, the government, or is it the students responsibility to give themselves an education? I will try to bring light to the subject. Keep one thing in mind; I will be talking about my own opinions and personal experiences, but I hope that they will be enough to have you agree with me.
I have been going to school ever since I was five; I’m eighteen now. There have been many bumps along the way; many ups and downs. It has been a roller coaster ride- NO! a journey. That is what education is, nothing more that a journey, and like every journey it has a destination. What is education’s destination? It’s knowledge. You may not want to get there for the same reasons I do, but that is where you want to go. You may want to reach this destination because you want to become a doctor or a lawyer. What ever your reasons are you first have to finish or continue the journey. I say continue because knowledge has no boundaries, and if you thirst for it, like I do, the journey is never ending.
Knowledge, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, is the fact, state, or condition of understanding, and to understand is to comprehend as a fact; to grasp clearly, and to realize. If knowledge is to understand, and understanding is to realize, then knowledge, according to the definition of self-realization, is the fulfillment by one's own efforts of the possibilities of development of the self.
