What it means to be different in the world?
No wonder you think of an alien when you read the topic. No, I will not talk about aliens in this essay at all. Yet I will talk about some body who is in minority; somebody who is different in the society; some body who is so different that he is watched when he goes to the places like malls; some body who is minority in a minority. Another word for this person will be a social outcast or pariah. Does this person not have the right to live? Does he not have the right to practice his religion or culture? Does he not have the right express his feelings? In this piece I will talk about the experiences I have gone through being a Muslim and more specifically a Shia Muslim after the incident like 9/11. Friend, if you are interested in my sad story then keep on reading; or if not, then put this junk in the recycle bin so that they can recycle the paper.
To me, the feeling of being different is not very different from the feeling of being unique. But the difference is only that when you are unique, you are special; yet when you are different, you have done something unacceptable or wrong. The incident of 9/11 has played a vital role in degrading the reputation of Muslim around the world. A week later when I went to the school, the fellow kids asked me all types of different questions. One kid asked me, “When are you bombing the school?” When I ever left for playing in the dream park of Martin Luther king, where kids from different colour play together, parents would not allow there children to play with any Muslim kid. I swear to God I realized how the black people used to live in 50’s. When ever I went to the mall, people would look at me in a weird way as if I was just going to plot a bomb. Some white girl spitted on my sister’s face. I would like to ask these people a question: Just because Osama bin laden is Muslim, Does that really mean all Muslims are terrorist?
