For theatre to be successful it must have an appeal to the audience and in order for it to be a good piece of theatre, it must be unified in all areas of its production. These areas are the set, the script and the acting. If all these elements are sound in the process of production then the audience would believe and accept the show. This essay will explore these three elements and highlight how important these elements are in order to produce good theatre. Making a good piece of theatre involves the work and expertise of many different people. The minimum requirement for theatre may be an actor and an audience, but today’s audience expect a little bit more. They expect scenery, a well written script, lighting and sound effects. The involvement of the writer, director, actors, designers, producers, stagehands, light and sound technicians is extremely important if a play is to have any chance of success. Stage design is not just a background for a performance, it works in ways very similar to an actor by the way it speaks to an audience by its scale, weight, shape, texture, colour, smell, by the way it is lit and how it sounds. The set is the first thing the audience sees and should give a clear indication of location, time and place. Sometimes more thought goes into deciding what to place on stage. Decisions are to be made on the period it is to be set, depending on the chosen script, the colour scheme for the scenery and if any furniture, doors or staircases are needed to accommodate the action of the play. The set design for Brian Friel Living Quarters was spectacular. Time period was easily established by the type of furniture used and location was clearly identified. A revolving stage was used and rotated several time for scene changes.
