b) Brian O’Connal is the main character in the novel “Who Has Seen the Wind” by W.O. Mitchell and in the novel “The Mountain and the Valley” by Ernest Buckler, the main character David Canaan relates to Brian O’Connal with many similarities in personality and actions. O’Connal and Canaan both live in small towns that are in the country areas. Both O’Connal and Canaan know what it is like to have siblings, O’Connal has a younger brother and Canaan has a sister named Anna and a brother named Chris. Both boys have a grandmother who lived with them and they grew up around. The one major similarity that O’Connal and Canaan share is that they have both experienced death of a loved one. O’Connal first experienced death when the newborn baby pigeon dies and then when his dog, Jappy died. O’Connal understood death more when his father died from an illness. Canaan can relate to O’Connal because Canaan lost of the closet people in his life and someone who he cared about. When Effie died Canaan had a hard time cooping and grieving, similar to O’Connal who didn’t understand death because he experienced it at such a young age. O’Connal and Canaan both understand that O’Connal’s father and Effie are not coming back and they both feel heartbroken and emptiness. Both boys are very young when they experienced death and start to understand that people die and live and it is a natural part of life. Another similarity between O’Connal and Canaan is that they both grew up around animals and both of they’re families were not wealthy. Both boys have friends and family they can rely on for help or advice. The differences that O’Connal and Canaan have are that Canaan is older, more mature and selfish where as O’Connal is still young and very naive. Also O’Connal and Canaan are both very responsible because O’Connal had to take care of his dog and younger brother.
