Nate Silver is the face of a new force taking over sports and other areas of everyday life. That force is the rising importance and relevance of statistics and statistical analysis. There is a growing demand for individuals that can take lots of information and organize it into a readable manner, and Nate Silver has been a role model for those aspiring statisticians.
Nate Silver began his career as an economic consultant with KPMG and was unenthused about his job like the majority of people. While he was working with KPMG, Nate began working on projects that would ultimately lead him away from KPMG. The project that propelled Nate into the sports world was his PECOTA (Player Empirical Comparison and Optimization Test Algorithm) system. PECOTA is a sabermetric system for forecasting Major League Baseball player performance, mostly used for fantasy baseball purposes. Nate Silver sold his PECOTA system to Baseball Prospectus, a website dedicated to baseball sabermetrics in exchange for a partnership interest. He continued to develop and use his PECOTA system with Baseball Prospectus and became a writer for the website. Nate wrote several books while working for Baseball Prospectus, most notably Baseball Between the Numbers. His articles eventually landed on ESPN, Sports Illustrated, and the New York Times.
While Nate was still with Baseball Prospectus, he began translating his statistical expertise into the political world. Around the time of the 2008 United States presidential election Nate established a blog called FiveThirtyEight.com, which combined his advanced statistical analysis with the ongoing political election. To further Nate’s growing reputation, he correctly predicted the winning presidential candidate in 49 out of 50 states while also correctly predicting every state’s Senate race.
