After the death of Lenin the communist party lost its leader. The lack of a leader was one of the main concerns of the party, as they needed to work in order to make the party grow and become stronger. Leon Trotsky was one of the key figures of the communist party which was one of the candidates to take Lenin’s place. But after several of fights in between the party the resultant leader was Joseph Stalin who due to his political skills and his personal characteristics managed to become the leader of the communist party. Along this essay, the emergence of Stalin as a leader of the USSR by 1929 rather than Trotsky will be analyzed.
Trotsky had been a key figure in the communist party since august 1917. His main role in the party was to be the commander in chief of the red army. He was one of the biggest reasons why the reds won the civil war. Trotsky was a very skillful man which had many leader characteristics, which gave him a lot of potential to become the leader of the communist party, but his qualities were ignored by many of the other members of the party. He was ignored as he was known as an arrogant and too high minded. He was dismissive of his colleagues even though he was respected. The fact that he began as a Menshevik and only joined to the Bolsheviks by the late 1917’s, made him appear as disloyal and many thought of him as untrustworthy, and the idea of his intentions to become a dictator was mentioned. Trotsky was also very mediocre in political drudgery and didn’t care much for this. This caused him to lack those characteristics of a leader in the political sense, this being that he had no skill whatsoever at political alliances, trades and dialogues with other parties, members or even countries. The mayor weakness was his arrogance as he tended to be rude to many colleagues of the party. This created alliances against him among the members who didn’t want him to become the leader of the USSR.
