Why I Want to Become a Guidance Counselor

Goals and Objectives:
I wish to pursue a graduate degree in educational guidance to further my goal of working in a school as a childhood guidance counselor. I am interested in helping children of all ages develop as students and members of their communities. I have an undergraduate degree in child psychology, and experience working as an educator and post-graduate social worker. I would like to extend and combine my knowledge of psychology and education to enable children to achieve well-being and success in a complex and ever-changing world.
Working with children and seeing them succeed is my passion. I consider this work a privilege and an honor, and believe that I possess qualities that the best counselors must have: caring, patience and open-mindedness. I expect my graduate studies to help me develop these qualities more fully, so that I may skillfully assist students in understanding themselves and gaining the tools they need to develop into healthy adults, capable of living productive and fulfilling lives. I also anticipate that my graduate work in Educational Guidance and Counseling will prepare me to work with students of all ages in dealing with the emotional and physical changes that affect self-perception and school performance. Finally, I believe that a graduate degree will provide me with detailed knowledge about the personal development of children throughout their school years, and prepare me to assist children in all phases of their growth.
My ultimate goal in pursuing an advanced degree is to become an invaluable asset to my school district by fulfilling multiple roles such as assessing student interests and personalities; working with individuals who have different backgrounds, problems and goals; collaborating with educators and other professionals in helping students achieve success, and assisting classroom teachers in providing instruction that benefits students with a variety of learning styles.
My greatest wish is to support...
