Character Analysis: Wide Sargasso Sea PART ONE Coco Coco was Annette's beloved pet parrot. The amount of admiration Annette had for her pet parrot was immense and she would even attempt to risk her own life to safe him during the blaze in Coulibri. Unfortunately, the innocent bird perishes in the fire set by anger locals, whom were once forced into slavery by people much like the Cosways. Coco was perched on the windowsill and unable to fly to safety because Mr. Mason had clipped his wings. This incident symbolically represents Antoinette’s own fate; in the novel of Jane Eyre, we’ve already been exposed to the future that is in store for her. Like Coco, Antoinette’s proverbial wings have also been cut by her husband, whom also shares the common British decent like Mr. Mason, when she is shipped across the ocean with complete financial dependency, away from her home [familiar and free], to being shackled in a cage-like attic much like pet. Coco’s inability to migrate to safety parallels Antoinette’s flightless dependency where she too perishes in a blaze. Daniel Cosway Daniel is Antoinette’s illegitimate half brother, as a result of his mother’s rape by her Father. Daniel made it his sole purpose to destroy the Cosways for the negative life experiences he has gone through and does so by starting with Antoinette. Daniel presents Antoinette’s husband with a letter pronouncing dirty family secrets along with Antoinette’s inevitable insanity, inherited from both her parents, whom he stated were both crazy. Daniel’s letter was the confirmation Antoinette’s husband needed to feed an already suspicion to his towards his bride and reason to distance himself from his premature marriage; Daniel becomes a catalyst for these manifestations of distrust. The letter increased further thoughts of paranoia in the direction of some sort of conspiracy involving the nuptials for Antoinette’s husband.
