This essay will address how material things on Mansfield Road in Nottingham contribute towards differences from that of City Road in Cardiff. Mansfield Road is one of the longest roads in Nottingham and is filled with shops, take-aways, restaurants, pubs, student accommodation and houses. There are many different types of people who use Mansfield Road for many different reasons. The area has a large student population and is also relatively culturally diverse; this can be seen by looking at the wide range of shops and take-aways located on the street. This essay will address the issues of street furniture and what effect it has on different people who use the street, what affect the difference between night and day has on the street and lastly, culture.

Mansfield Road, like City Road has many examples of street furniture, these include bollards, bus shelters, bins and railings. Like most of the street furniture located on City Road, the street furniture on Mansfield road is all painted one colour, although unlike city road it is not painted in a bright colour. The street furniture on Mansfield Road is all painted in black and gold. This may cause problems for people with impaired sight, as the colour scheme does not make the street furniture easily visible from a distance. Mansfield Road has a large number of bollards located at the edge of the pavement like on City Road to ensure that drivers are not parking on the pavements and therefore preventing people from walking up and down the street. Unfortunately the bollards are placed quite close together and this prevents wheelchair users from crossing the road.
