George Orwell was born Eric Arthur Blair in 1903 in Motihari, Bengal, India. His father Richard was a civil servant in the Opium Department. His mother Ida was the daughter of a tea merchant in Burmah. At age one his mother moved he and his sister to England in seek of a better life. Their he attended he attended St. Cyprians preparatory school and earned a scholarship to both Eaton and Wellington College. He later chose to attend Eaton College. Georges first works were published in his college newspaper. In 1922 George went to burmah to in the Indian Imperial Police as an assistant superintendent until 1927. Orwell Returned to England in 1928-1929 as a poor beggar working low paying jobs. Orwell tried to get arrested as a drunk to get some knowledge on what it would be like to be in prison. 1928 was the year that George Orwell decided he wanted to become a writer. In the year 1933 Eric Blair finally changed his name to George Orwell. Since he couldn’t support himself as a writer he took a job as a teacher at a private school to earn money to live off. In 1936 he married Eileen O’Shaugnessy. That same year he was commissioned by publisher Victor Gollancz documentary account of the unemployment of North England for the Left Book Club for which he wrote “The Road to Wigan Pier”.
