If you were a woman, you were expected to be delightful and gregarious as well as well-mannered. If you were not handsome, which was said as “pretty” in the 19th century, your life would be predictably harder, because no one wants to associate with an unattractive women, or man for that matter. If you were considered uncivil or flirtatious you were considered the scum of the earth, because these were considered greatly intolerable qualities.
Women also had values towards a happy life during this era. Women wanted to be popular and liked by all. You were also expected to marry an opulent and amicable man with considerable etiquette and high-class family relations. Marrying a man without your father’s blessing or without your family and friend’s consent was impure and ridiculed greatly in 19th century England. You were to be disgraced by your family and despised by all. In other words, it was not a happy outcome.
There were many other significant and vital details of a resident of England’s life, such as family and wealth.
You must have high-quality relations and ancestors, who are considered mannerly and respectable with a significant fortune. If you were already married and had daughters of your own, it was very important for boasting and respect reasons, to have your daughter’s married off as quickly as possible with a most respectable man.
